Beach Advisory Issued for Patoka Lake

By John Szink Jun 15, 2026 | 11:08 AM

A Beach Advisory is in effect for Patoka Lake due to the presence of blue-green algae.

While blue-green algae is common in Indiana waterways, high levels of algae can negatively impact the water quality for recreationalists and swimmers.

Under a Beach Advisory, swimming and boating are still permitted and the swim beach will remain open, but swimmers should take the following precautions if visiting Patoka Lake:

• Avoid contact with algae
• Avoid swallowing water while swimming
• Take a bath or shower with warm soapy water after coming into contact with lake water
• Do not use lake water for cooking or bathing
• And, don’t allow your pets to swim in or drink water where algae is present
