Bloomington Mayor Seeks Metal Detector Law After Kirkwood Avenue Shooting

By John Szink Nov 2, 2026 | 8:18 AM

Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thompson is pointing to Indiana’s gun laws after a shooting that left seven people hurt on Kirkwood Avenue early Sunday, during Homecoming weekend.

Thompson says the city had a safety plan in place, with extra staffing and a visible police presence, but that no plan can stop every act of violence.

She praised officers for preventing further violence.

The mayor wants a new state law letting cities use metal detectors at large public gatherings, as stadiums do.

She says she’ll seek support before next year’s legislative session.
